Rail and Mass Transit

From the iconic International Terminal Waterloo in London to the Fulton Street Center in New York City, Grimshaw’s rail and transit schemes connect people and places, bringing increased traffic to new neighbourhoods and joining communities. Our projects provide enhanced passenger comfort and ease of use, vital gains in capacity, and award winning elegant civic spaces that are sensitive to their surrounds.

Aviation

Grimshaw is uniquely positioned to deliver designs which respond to growing and diversified requirements of air travel passengers, airport operators, and carriers. The passenger experience is at the forefront of our design approach, and we have a rich history of graceful solutions that put people first, whilst also responding to the needs of the airport business.

Infrastructure

Bridges, waste facilities, water filtration plants, and more. Our portfolio of infrastructure projects shares the thread of design efficiency engineered in reliability. Through close collaboration with engineers, we craft simple solutions to complex problems; compelling ideas that encompass a natural response.

Workplace

Grimshaw understands that workplace design cannot be approached with a one-size-fits-all attitude. The nature of work itself has changed dramatically over the past few decades and will continue for the next few. We have designed everything from high quality office space such as at 333 George Street, Sydney, to tech hubs such as Plexal in London. Our constantly growing knowledge of industrial design and interior design helps us create innovative and flexible workplace solution.

Master Planning

Grimshaw has developed a reputation for designing ground-breaking master plans which seek to change contemporary perceptions and expectations of urban living. The practice’s goal is to design transformative places that are as inspiring as they are functional. Connectivity, meaningful placemaking and sustainable growth inform our design principles and we take care to involve key stakeholders and communities as we create city-enhancing developments.

Industrial Design

At Grimshaw we often apply Industrial Design principles when designing our buildings to bring value for our clients through economies of scale and off-site fabrication techniques. Whether designing a building system or a standalone component, the emphasis is the same – to use technology and ingenuity to improve on what has come before, and to have a solution with longevity and flexibility to change.

Sport

Our work in the Sports sector is characterised by a unique response to brief and context. We are involved in all aspects of sports architecture and entertainment focused projects, from master planning to the design of sports arenas, performance amphitheatres, ice rinks, and athletic facilities. Each venue is a landmark attraction that, after close engagement with local communities, fans, and other stakeholders, caters to the needs of all audiences.

Industry

Grimshaw has a diverse portfolio of industrial building types of varying sizes, budgets and complexities. The practice’s projects range from the large-scale master planning of commercial campuses to small-scale components. Industrial buildings are about more than just space; they are about astute property decisions, operational efficiencies, cultural alignment and identity. Ultimately, they are about creating inspiring places to work.

Living

The practice has designed schemes of all shapes and sizes, and as the demand for flexible and affordable homes has grown, Grimshaw has increasingly pushed new innovations and styles of home; from rejuvenating historic spaces, to creating dynamic new living concepts. The practice proposes design solutions that respond to the needs of modern homeowners, tenants, and housing developers.

Culture and Exhibition Halls

Whether showcasing art or creating trade show environments, the buildings that house these experiences need to strike a balance of grandeur and simplicity. Our approach is based on an intimate understanding of highly complex urban environments, underpinned by detailed assessments of the diverse needs of people who use and operate them.

From large-span roof structures to eye-catching facades, Grimshaw’s culture and exhibition portfolio includes buildings that are grand in structure and scale with an attention to detail that sets them apart.

Science and Learning

Grimshaw’s portfolio of higher education and science projects includes a range of building typologies, from high specification laboratories to studio spaces with specialist acoustic requirements. The practice rationalises disparate campuses and reinvigorates the identity of universities with effective, cost efficient and striking structures that are sensitive to their localities.
