Creating a welcoming public face for UCL on Torrington Place, this six-storey addition to the New Engineering Building is distinctively outward looking and highlights the university’s presence in the area.

Housing the renowned Centre for Enterprise and Management in Industry, the building is planned with a high level of flexibility, enabling the most efficient use of the space for current tenants, as well as anticipating changes needed by any future users.

Its simple contemporary form knits in with its surroundings through the use of broad terracotta louvres and tiling, also seen on Grimshaw’s earlier Engineering Building and in the surrounding buildings of red brick.

In contrast to the predominantly reclusive buildings of neighbouring faculties, the facade emphasises transparency. Its full-height glazing at street level allows views in that captivate the public and present an open, engaging view of university life.
