Part of the original master plan for Southern Cross Station, 664 Collins Street provides quality commercial space in a landmark building at the junction of Melbourne’s CBD and Docklands.

Raised on a 200 m long concrete deck which sits above the rail environment, the project bounds the western side of the station. Its sister building, 699 Bourke Street, is located at the northern end of the deck.

In utilising the air space above platforms 13-16 of Southern Cross Station, the project creates 26,000 sq m of commercial premises in a highly desirable location.

The mass of the building is configured as a series of smaller volumes within the overall project to give a more human scale to the development. Each of the three distinct blocks express the areas available to tenants, with each designed to offer flexibility and space to gather in mini atria.

In response to the building’s context and to minimise the noise from the railway lines, a high-performance but elegant façade with acoustically rated glazing, as well as aluminium fins in varying densities, provide protection from disruptive outside noise and solar glare, optimising natural light and views of the streetscape.

This sense of permeability continues in the interior, with open, light spaces for occupants that are configured around a vertical circulation core.

Rising 12 storeys at its apex, the uppermost level features a double-height space for functions and conferences. An adjacent roof terrace gives expansive views across Docklands and the Yarra River, and acts as a beacon at night, marking the distinguished new Collins Street address.
