Project Duke Data Centre   Sydney, Australia

Project Duke integrates critical digital infrastructure within a complex urban context. This 90 MW data centre demonstrates how thoughtful design can reconcile the demanding technical requirements of data storage facilities with a sensitive urban context.

The site is located at the interface between industrial and residential zones within south Sydney. The inherent security requirements presented a particular design challenge, requiring careful consideration of how to integrate necessary protective measures without creating an
unwelcoming street presence.

The design incorporates industry-leading efficiency measures in response to intensive energy and water consumption demands. The building’s systems are also designed for adaptability, allowing for the integration of more efficient cooling technologies in the future.

The project’s response to its cultural context proved equally important. Working closely with Aboriginal designers and consultants, the team developed a sophisticated, water sensitive landscape design approach. This cultural engagement influenced everything from plant selection to the management of water on site.

The architectural expression emerges from a careful balance of technical requirements. The design celebrates the functionality of the building through articulated facades that reflect internal programs and the strategic placement of functional components such as generator gantries and acoustic screening.

The overall arrangement of the building creates a clear hierarchy of spaces, with office components positioned along the street providing street activation, while generator gantries are located away from residential neighbours. Generous setbacks create space for extensive landscaping, which covers 20% of the site and plays a crucial role in embedding the facility within its context.

Through close collaboration between disciplines and careful attention to detail, Project Duke demonstrates how large scale technical infrastructure can be successfully integrated into sensitive urban environments. The result is a facility that not only meets its functional requirements but also contributes positively to its surroundings through thoughtful design, environmental responsibility, and cultural awareness.

Project Duke is one of 5 data centres Grimshaw are currently designing for Goodman across Australia, totalling a total IT load of over 550 MW.
