BIM Specialist, New York


The main role of the BIM Specialist is to support Grimshaw architectural project teams in the use of BIM tools and workflows, specifically Autodesk Revit. The BIM Specialist provides technical support directly to project team members and reports to the Project BIM Manager, providing feedback on the team’s requirements for training, workflows or content.

Required skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Must be able to work in a versatile, organized and methodical way to prioritize and balance workloads
  • Advanced knowledge of and proven practical background in Autodesk Revit and related BIM authoring software
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of legacy BIM / CAD applications and practices, particularly Microstation
  • Experienced with model federation and coordination workflows using Navisworks Manage and based around IFC format
  • Experienced in delivering projects to BIM standards with validation and QA processes
  • Familiarity with design applications such as McNeel Rhinoceros. Experience with interoperability with Revit is highly beneficial

Desired skills

  • Additional knowledge of Dynamo/Grasshopper is highly beneficial

  • Must possess at least 3+ years of relevant experience with Revit and BIM projects.

  • Support DT team in promoting DT initiatives across the office
  • Contribute to the global DT platform

Project responsibilities

  • Assist BIM Manager in ensuring that project work complies with the global BIM standards and the project-specific standards
  • Assist BIM Manager in ensuring any changes in procedures and standards are effectively communicated to the project team and implemented
  • Identify and report to the BIM Manager any opportunities for improvements to our workflows, tools and the capabilities of teams
  • Set up new project files including linked model hierarchies, survey files, building models, CAD imports, shared coordinates and starter content
  • Document solutions and workflows to be shared with other teams
  • Provide advice, training, guidance and at-desk support for Revit and other authoring platforms
  • Create project-specific and office-wide Revit content
  • Prepare BIM models for issue

Project coordination

  • Coordinate team activity and workflows on project Common Data Environment (CDE)
  • Prepare models and perform clash detection, according to defined standards
  • Liaise with external design teams to resolve clashes, coordination issues, any BIM model or CDE issues
  • Conduct regular reviews to ensure compliance of BIM models and workflows to defined standards
  • Produce federated models and COBie datasets where necessary

2019 Summer Intern - New York,

Program Description

In the New York Studio you will work collaboratively in a team environment, perform design and technical production of documents through all phases of architecture. This role includes coordinating with the project team, model shop. You will learn about the daily realities of architectural practice, acquire comprehensive experience in basic practice areas, explore specialized areas of practice, and develop professional judgment.

Specific knowledge, skills and techniques will be learned:

  • Understand Grimshaw’s design ethos and execution strategies
  • Research and evaluate project requirements, building code, zoning regulation, site data to develop recommendations on the feasibility of a project
  • Understand implication of evolving sustainable design strategies and technologies
  • Understand design integration of building components and systems
  • Communicate design ideas with hand drawings, 2D, 3D computer aided design software, Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Skills & Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate architectural degree program
  • Knowledge of 2D CAD and 3D modeling using some/all of the following: Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Revit
  • Experience creating presentation graphics in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a project team
