Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Subway Station   Toronto, Canada

Part of a significant extension for Toronto Transit Commission’s York and Toronto subway, the Vaughan Metropolitan Center forms the terminus of the Spadina Subway Extension – one of six new stations on the route. Serving one of Canada’s fastest growing municipalities, the project provides access to the subway, surface light-rail, bus station, vehicular drop-off and pick-up as well as facilities for cyclists.

Its 13,300 sq m of intermodal transit services will act as a catalyst for local development: as the main transport centre for the developing 125 ha city planned to grow around it, the extension provides a regular, rapid subway connection to downtown Toronto and has knock-out panels around its perimeter to directly connect to future buildings at Concourse Level.

As well as encouraging greater use of public transport, the station development creates an enjoyable pedestrian experience, with accessible paths, easy connections for onward travel and attractive landscaping.

With clear circulation paths, intuitive way finding and efficient transfers between different transport modes, Vaughan Metropolitan Centre is a robust, elegant interchange.

The station itself introduces natural light deep into the underground concourse through a sweeping domed ceiling that integrates a public artwork by Paul Raff Studio.

Its mirrors integrate with the canopy structure to create a three-dimensional collage that reflects skylights and the dynamic activity of the station environment.

“We are always looking for opportunities to create high quality places with real character. By elevating a functional building to something artful and full of life that people will remember and enjoy, we can have a greater impact on the urban space and user experience.”
