Neville Bonner Bridge   Brisbane, Australia

The Neville Bonner Bridge provides a new pedestrian connection across Brisbane River, creating an iconic gateway between the South Bank arts and cultural precinct and the future Queen’s Wharf Brisbane entertainment and lifestyle precinct.

With the surrounding parklands context influencing the design, the structure of the bridge has been highly considered and engineered to achieve an elegant and efficient outcome.

The hybrid mast and arch design minimises the structure required to span the river, creating a lightweight yet dramatic presence through an inherently environmentally responsible solution.

Featuring a suspended deck to encourage people to linger and enjoy views of the river, city and parklands, as well as a continuous shade structure to provide protection from the subtropical sun, Neville Bonner Bridge seeks to celebrate the pedestrian and provide significant public amenity.

Named in honour of the late Senator Neville Bonner AO, the first Indigenous Australian to become a member of the Commonwealth Parliament and Australian of the Year, the bridge adds to Brisbane’s array of unique water infrastructure and ultimately enable greater connectivity across Brisbane’s CBD.

“Shaped as an elegant and sinuous ribbon reaching out from South Bank towards the city centre of Brisbane, the carefully composed hybrid mast and arch design achieves a lightweight yet dramatic form which serves as an elegant landmark for the Neville Bonner Bridge.”

Neil Stonell, Managing Partner, Grimshaw

"The Queensland Government recognised in its vision that a new, exclusively pedestrian link from Southbank to the vibrancy of Queen’s Wharf and the CBD was fundamental to the connectivity between the project and civic fabric of Brisbane. Since opening, it has become a vital connection in the city between the CBD and Southbank achieving more than the projected 9,000 crossings per day."
