EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is the only binational airport in the world, jointly administered by France and Switzerland. As project manager for EuroAirport’s Terminal Modular Evolution, Grimshaw is shaping the Reference Design for a comprehensive terminal transformation, one that will reshape the passenger experience and future-proof the airport for decades to come.
EuroAirport’s current infrastructure is under pressure, with record passenger volumes outpacing the terminal's capacity, creating congestion at peak times and limiting the flexibility operators and airlines need. The Terminal Modular Evolution addresses this with four clear ambitions: to deliver capacity and service levels that match rising passenger expectations; to make the airport more attractive, competitive, and operationally adaptable; to open the airport to the city and strengthen its role as a regional gateway; and to set a benchmark for simplicity, understated elegance, and carbon neutrality.
The programme is broken down into independent components that can be delivered on their owntimelines, giving EuroAirport the flexibility to adjust the sequence ofimplementation depending on its needs and resources. The complete programmecovers approximately 20,000–30,000 m² of new construction alongside acomprehensive refurbishment of the existing terminal.
Since 2021, Grimshaw has developed the architectural programme underpinning this vision, establishing the masterplan, module layouts, key architectural and structural principles, and a phased construction roadmap.
