Whittle Laboratory / GRIMSHAW

Whittle Laboratory
Cambridge, United Kingdom

The Whittle Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, located within the Cambridge West Innovation District, is designed as a catalyst for rapid industrial innovation. As the UK’s integrated technology accelerator, it brings together researchers, students, industry partners and entrepreneurs with a shared goal: advancing zero-carbon aviation.

The project repurposes and expands the original 1970s Whittle Laboratory, positioning it as a key part of the University’s future engineering campus. Developed in collaboration with the Department of Engineering and industry partners including Siemens, Rolls-Royce, Mitsubishi and Dyson, the building sets a new benchmark for research environments – a series of interconnected spaces that visually and physically link innovation activities.

At the heart of the facility, the National Centre for Propulsion and Power (NCPP) provides advanced infrastructure for zero-carbon propulsion research. Sustainability underpins the entire project, with strategies informed by the Energy Cost Metric to reduce whole-life energy use.
