Set within the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, the Tropical Dome has been a Brisbane Icon since its opening in 1977.
Grimshaw, in association with Archipelago, have been engaged by the Brisbane City Council to provide design advice for the reimagining of the future Mt Coot-tha Gardens Tropical Dome.
More than 700,000 locals and tourists enjoy the Botanic Gardens every year, with this number expected to grow to 1.7 million by 2030.
The design team will evaluate and propose a series of potential outcomes to assist Council in the provisioning of a reimagined contemporary facility which remediates current issues that the large geodesic structure presents.
The proposal will establish foundation for the formulation of a business case centred on providing an ‘experience’ of the tropics with a high-quality visitor experience, including enhanced educational and interpretation outcomes set within a thriving living collection.
“We are excited to be exploring how the relationship between nature and architecture may be celebrated in the revisioning of the Tropical Dome, a geodesic structure that houses the Brisbane Botanical Garden’s collection of exotic and native tropical species, and which has become a destination of its own right.”
