This competition-winning project for the renowned All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) is part of our ten-year master plan to develop and improve AELTCs facilities at Wimbledon.
Our completed work includes the remodelling of No 1 Court, with a new fixed and retractable roof that allows for uninterrupted play regardless of weather conditions.
A hugely complex adaptive reuse project spread over four floors of existing accommodation, the redesigned court had to be fully operational during the two-and-a-half years of construction for both the 2017 and 2018 championships.

The unique concertina geometry and fabric (Tenara) of the new retractable roof allows for maximum exposure to the sky when opened and can close fully within 10 minutes. The span and membrane structure was informed by a detailed technical PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) analysis, which allows proper daylight to the grass playing surface below. Additionally, the work accommodates a chiller farm to condition the bowl environment when closed, removing the risk of condensation on the playing surface.
The design works holistically to provide an outstanding experience for spectators and players alike. In addition to the new roof, our redesign provided an increased bowl capacity, a new two-level public plaza and food court in place of Court 19, extensive back-of-house and support facilities, screens and public realm enhancements to the Aorangi terrace, and a new shop. Despite the physical site constraints, the new No 1 Court represents a tripling of hospitality accommodation within the building.
