Life at Grimshaw

Working on inspiring projects that impact everyday life is the rewarding experience of being part of Grimshaw.

This experience encompasses the projects we deliver, the people we work with and the places and communities we help transform. Our own Grimshaw community works hard to make sure that, wherever we work, our people and those we work with feel supported, included, challenged, enabled and fulfilled. And we like to have a lot of fun along the way, providing some sense of joy.

Outreach and volunteering

Philanthropy is an important part of our culture. Grimshaw supports every employee in establishing, running and participating in outreach programmes in a range of contexts, allocating every employee over 2 days per year to volunteering activities. We also sponsor a number of charities and organisations that aim to widen the architectural industry’s positive impact on society.

With over 80% of the office paired with either a mentor or mentee the programme offers our staff the opportunity to share and gain knowledge, expertise and skills.

The Women in Architecture group organises panel events, workshops and guest speakers as part of a range of initiatives which look at issues affecting women in the built environment industry.

+

To help Grimshaw identify the skills and experience in our office we ask all staff to complete a skills profile.

+

We encourage our people to find a healthy balance in their day-to-day lives with diet, stress relief, and fitness activities.

Development reviews and appraisals ensure each individual is on track to achieve their goals.

International assignments present employees with the opportunity to take their skills around the world and build their breadth of experience.

Mental Health & Wellbeing

We take measures to support our people’s mental health and wellbeing, understanding that we can play a positive role in individual’s mental health journey. As part of this, we train in-studio mental health first-aiders, provide access to leading online tools and guidance, as well as run regular awareness and discussion events in our studios. In 2020 we recognised World Mental Health Day by closing our all our studios across the world, for one day, encouraging our people to take the day for themselves.

Diversity and inclusivity

Grimshaw is an equal opportunities employer. In engendering change within society towards greater equality, we have established policies in place that work towards gender, sexuality, economic background, age and race inclusivity within our practice, and prioritise diversity at every level. We bring this approach and ambition together through our supporting internal and external action groups, partnering with advocates and breaking down barriers through mentoring and training.

Social + sports

Our people stay with Grimshaw because of the genuine social connections and participatory and collaborative studio atmosphere which is part of our culture. The long-lasting personal and professional relationships formed in our community are invaluable to the way we work so effectively as a practice. From sports teams and competitions to book clubs and cooking, there is a club and community for everyone.
