University of Southampton Boldrewood Innovation Campus Phase 1   Southampton, UK

Grimshaw’s master plan and family of buildings for the University of Southampton provides cutting-edge research facilities; at the same time, the scale and arrangement of the project encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and research excellence that is fundamental to the concept behind the new Boldrewood Innovation Campus.

Set on a 4.3 ha site, the four completed buildings include Southampton’s Marine and Maritime Institute, research facilities supporting the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment and the Global Technology Centre of Lloyd’s Register.

Accessed from a central sloping lawn that forms the centre of the campus, the buildings reflect the new, cohesive structure of the university’s partnership, which brings students and researchers to work alongside leading engineers of Lloyd’s Register.

Services within the buildings include a hydro science facility with a 138-metre towing and wave tank, two large wind tunnels, and water flumes for the detailed study of fluid dynamics. The National Infrastructure Laboratory will add to this suite of pioneering campus resources and is due for completion in 2018.

The university and Lloyd's Register buildings both have generous accommodation stairs. The plate steel cantilevered “ships stair” within the Lloyds atrium in particular, with its yacht deck timber treads and landings has also become emblematic of the activity within that building.

Lloyd’s Register’s ambition in establishing the GTC is to stimulate innovation, create new business and establish the City of Southampton and the wider south Hampshire region as a magnet for inward investment.
