The Wave – Stage 1 Greenfield Package (CoastalTraX Consortium)
Queensland, Australia

Grimshaw Architects, as part of the CoastalTraX consortium, has been awarded the Design and Pre-Construction contract for The Wave Stage 1 Greenfield package. The Wave is a landmark transport infrastructure project that will transform regional connectivity within South East Queensland, Australia.

Working as part of the CoastalTraX consortium, Grimshaw is responsible for leading the Bells Creek and Caloundra Stations and Stage 1 corridor architecture and urban design, working collaboratively with industry-leading contractors, engineers and design specialists. The project is being delivered in collaboration with the Queensland Government.

The CoastalTraX consortium brings together a highly experienced project team comprising ACCIONA, Georgiou, Mott MacDonald, Aurecon, local rail subcontractor DT Infrastructure, local architecture partner MODE Design, and local landscape architecture partner Aspect Studios. This integrated team combines international infrastructure expertise with deep local knowledge to deliver innovative, sustainable and buildable solutions that respond to the unique character of the Sunshine Coast.

The Wave is a generational investment in public transport infrastructure and a cornerstone of the Queensland Government's Brisbane 2032 Delivery Plan, which focuses on infrastructure for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.

The project will improve connectivity between the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay and Brisbane while creating a lasting legacy for local communities beyond 2032.

The Stage 1 Greenfield package includes the delivery of a new dual-track rail line between Beerwah and Caloundra, incorporating associated rail infrastructure, new stations at Bells Creek (Aura) and Caloundra, active transport links, park ‘n’ ride facilities, local road upgrades, and a recreational parkland.

Design and Pre-Construction activities are currently underway, with major construction anticipated to commence in early 2027, subject to approvals and funding.

Grimshaw is responsible for establishing a coherent design vision and line-wide identity that reflects the Sunshine Coast’s distinctive landscape, culture and aspirations. Our designs have focused on creating meaningful civic places, driven by community and customer centred design, that contribute to long-term regional growth and prosperity. Through the integration of architecture, urban design, landscape, wayfinding and public realm strategies, Grimshaw is creating a passenger-focused network that supports accessibility, sustainability and an exceptional user experience.

Grimshaw's experience in delivering customer-centred design focuses on creating transport environments that are intuitive, inclusive, resilient and responsive to place. This expertise is complemented by the local knowledge of MODE Design and the landscape leadership of Aspect Studios, ensuring solutions are both internationally informed and uniquely grounded in the Sunshine Coast context.

The Wave will leave a lasting legacy through the creation of memorable stations, vibrant public spaces and a transformative public transport network that will support regional growth for generations to come.
