The vision for the Mernda Rail Extension proposal represents a new civic identity for areas across the entire line, stimulating growth in the Mernda town centre while fostering connection between its local communities.
With three state-of-the-art stations at Middle Gorge, Mernda and Hawkstowe designed by Grimshaw, the project provides approximately 8km of new duplicated rail line between South Morang station and Mernda, three rail bridges and two underpasses, as well as train stabling in Mernda.
For the first time, thousands of residents in the wider Melbourne area are connected to trains as well as new cycling and pedestrian paths and significantly enhanced bus connections.
Our design proposal considers the semi-rural aspect of the region as well as the need to support one of Australia’s fastest growing communities. The station forms draw inspiration from the traditional Australian homestead, while stone and wood recovered from the site has been reused in station building finishes.
