Melbourne Metro Rail Project   Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

The Melbourne Metro Rail is a critical city-shaping project that allows for the expansion of Melbourne’s rail network and increased services to the city’s growth areas in the north, west and south-east.

As Victoria’s largest public transport project, the Melbourne Metro Rail project will provide new nine-kilometer long, twin-rail tunnels that will run from Kensington to South Yarra, with five new underground stations to better connect the city. Grimshaw is responsible for the Station Reference Design of the new underground stations at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain.

The alignment includes direct pedestrian connections with the City Loop at Melbourne Central Station and Flinders Street Station, increasing the number of trains running through the city and peak time passenger capacity.

Each station is uniquely designed to contribute to the specifics of their cultural and physical environments while sitting clearly within an identifiable line-wide design. With the commuter’s journey and precinct integration treated as key to the success of the project, the elegant line-wide and precinct architecture will trigger the transformation of Melbourne's rail system into a contemporary metro network.
