Melbourne Airport Design Vision   Melbourne, Australia

The ‘Melbourne Airport Design Vision’ guide communicates the aspirational look and feel for the airport’s transformation. It provides a structured framework that ensures consistency of the traveller experience using a common visual design language.

The overarching vision document is interdisciplinary in its approach blending communication design, architectural design and interior design concepts. It is prescriptive for consistency, yet flexible enough to empower designers to innovate and produce quality outcomes that deliver on the vision, and create delight across the airport.

It provides design principles, and tools to improve user experience. It outlines the airport’s functional requirements, and opportunities to create enjoyable spaces.

Mandated and endorsed by Melbourne Airport’s leadership team, the document is issued internally to Design Managers and Development Managers, and externally to design consultants who use it as a baseline for design.

The perceptions of visitors, airlines, business partners, government, regulators, shareholders and Melbourne Airport staff are shaped by their exposure to, and experience of, design.

Applying design principles enhances user experience, drives revenue generation and will bring a cohesive ‘Melbourne’ character to the entire campus – delivering an airport that connects back to the artistically and culturally rich city it serves, and with it, the excitement of the travel experience.

At the heart of the guide is a deep understanding of Melbourne’s vibrancy and cultural character. This character informs the design vision and connects the city to the airport.

The 'Melbourne Airport Design Vision’ guide was selected as a Finalist in the coveted 2018 AGDA Design Awards and Victorian Premier's Design Awards, recognising the positive impact good design has on business outcomes, the environment and society.
