Located on a disused former national grid site along the river Avon close to the Georgian centre of Bath, and within the UNSECO World Heritage City, Grimshaw’s brief for the Bath Gasworks site is to deliver 600 residential units of varied tenure using a modular volumetric prefabricated system developed for The Berkeley Group, as well as a nursery and sustainable riverside transport route.
The scheme targets net zero carbon utilising a water-source heat-pump district heating system, and provides a biodiversity net gain of at least 10% by employing a new riverside nature corridor, green and brown roofs, and a sustainable urban drainage system.
The existing site is highly contaminated but will be fully remediated prior to the construction of the development.
The site has a prominent riverside location within the city, necessitating a massing, materiality, and landscaping strategy that develops sensitively within the context of extensive protected views from the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The design of the development responds to the character and heritage of Georgian Bath, as well as the industrial heritage of the Western Riverside Quarter.
The project involved extensive consultation through design review panels, preapplication meetings, and public consultations; a planning application was successfully submitted for the project in 2022.
