Garibaldi Exhibition Building   Milan, Italy

The Garibaldi Exhibition Building, which is part of the 3 ha Garibaldi Repubblica masterplan by Cesar Pelli, anchors the eastern edge of the masterplan's site and addresses the 92,000 sq m public park to the north.

The starting point for the events building is a simple box, which forms the core of the project. This orthogonal events space gives exhibitors the freedom to construct their own temporary display concessions on each occasion. In contrast to the simple interior, the exterior is marked by a distinctive serrated profile and draws inspiration from the Italian fashion industry.

Its metal skin loosely envelops the hall and is shaped by the site’s parameters, creating a sculpture at an urban scale. The building is raised on a podium, which creates elevated piazzas along three facades. Here, visitors and exhibitors alike can experience an immediate connection to the events held within through transparent, full-height glazing.

To the north, the facade allows for exhibitions to spill out and overlook the park. Both east and west facades are sheltered by the overhang of the metallic skin, which creates a frame for suspended holographic screens that can carry a variety of digital media.
