Bath Rugby New Stadium   Bath, United Kingdom

Located in the heart of a World Heritage City and alongside the River Avon the project is a new 18,000 capacity stadium for Bath Rugby Club. The project is on the site of their existing facility at the historic Recreation Ground and aims to develop the stadium as an exciting riverside destination, sitting within a wider regeneration masterplan.

The scheme will provide a new state-of-the-art stadium, café and restaurant space in a vibrant location to enjoy the river and views back to the historic city centre. The design is appropriately scaled to preserve sensitive heritage views, retaining mature trees along the riverside with revitalised public realm and enhancements to the stadium’s north, east and west stands.

The west stand looks out to the historic centre of Bath and is civic in scale, referencing the classic proportions of the city’s Georgian architecture. The east stand faces a more residential outlook with an aspect to the verdant hillsides beyond that envelop the city. The landscape nature of the Rec is drawn up onto the stand with a planted bund forming the open east concourse overlooking activity on the outfield.

“I thoroughly enjoy working with the team at Grimshaw. They are rigorous, passionate, unbelievably committed and great listeners, which makes the process hugely positive and productive. Their personality is backed by strong credentials, integrity and an approach that delivers the best outcome.”
