Grimshaw and ASPECT Studios, in partnership with the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, are designing the Coastal Works for the Twelve Apostles Precinct Redevelopment Project. The project is part of the $500 million Geelong City Deal – a 10-year partnership between the Australian and Victorian governments and the City of Greater Geelong to revitalise Geelong and unlock the potential of the Great Ocean Road visitor economy.
The coastal works will improve or build new coastal attractions and walking trails. The works include revegetation and safety improvements to the Loch Ard Gorge carpark, safety upgrades at Gibson Steps, upgraded visitor lookouts at Twelve Apostles and Gibson Steps (including an all-weather amphitheatre at the Twelve Apostles lookout), a new bike and walking trail between the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge*, two new lookouts on the new Twelve Apostles to Loch Ard Gorge trail*, upgrades to existing trails, and a new transit pod is proposed at Loch Ard Gorge to support sustainable transport within the Precinct.
The development of the design has been driven by a strong and reciprocal working relationship with the Eastern Maar people, and as a result the Coastal Works will be culturally significant and enriching for the region.
“At Grimshaw, we’re honoured to be leading a team that is designing a sustainable and regenerative future for the Twelve Apostles Precinct, and we’re excited to help realise such an important project for the local region and state of Victoria. The Twelve Apostles Precinct is an iconic environmental destination which must be protected and celebrated for future generations.” said Grimshaw Partner, Andrew Perez.
Matthew Mackay, Studio Director at ASPECT Studios, said collaboration was central to the success of the design. “The ASPECT Studios’ team is privileged to be co-designing new, world-class facilities within one of Australia’s most important cultural landscapes. Our partnership with the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation will be key in realising a remarkable, enriched experience of the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge in the future.”
Grimshaw will manage the team of design experts to move the Coastal Works project vision into concept designs for community feedback later this year.
