Articles Grimshaw appointed to design the Tramway Express de l’Ouest Lyonnais in Lyon

As part of a consortium led by Egis, Grimshaw and Atelier Schall and landscape architects Gautier+Conquet have been appointed by SYTRAL to the Tramway Express de l’Ouest Lyonnais (TEOL) project in Lyon. This major new public transport link will extend the T2 tramway with two underground stations and three tram stations, connecting passengers to the west of the city to Lyon and support over 55,000 passenger journeys a day when it opens in 2032.

The TEOL includes the creation of new tramway infrastructure between the districts of Confluence (Lyon 2nd district) and Alaï (Francheville and Tassin-la-Demi-Lune), via Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, the plateau of Lyon's 5th district and Libération (Tassin-la-Demi-Lune), with a 5-minute service frequency during rush hour. Across the line intermodal connections will be made with the railway network, metro lines A and B, and existing tramway lines T1 and 2, linking into the wider city network.

The design will create a coherency across the TEOL, between the surface and undergrounds stations, the new neighbourhoods and public spaces it enables and passes through, and the network system. The extension will be integrated into Lyon metropolitan area network and intuitively support passenger journeys and incorporate the emerging modes of active travel across the city.

‘Working with Sytral and the Egis consortium on TEOL, we will contribute to this enhancement of Lyon’s transport network – integrating an essential high performance infrastructure system but also providing journey and destination points that inherently connect to the city and create passenger journeys that are humanised, safe, sustainable and intuitive.’

Alice Barrois, Principal, Grimshaw

The extension of the tramway is approximately three kilometres to the west of the city of Lyon, 50% of which will be underground. Egis is the lead engineer, overseeing all phases of the design and construction, working with Grimshaw on the design of the Charcot-Provinces station. Atelier Schall on the design of Point du Jour station, and with Gautier+Conquet for the above ground developments.
