Grimshaw’s new research laboratory facility for UNSW’s School of Materials Science and Engineering has received the Educational Architecture Award, as announced by the Australian Institute of Architects’ New South Wales Chapter on Friday 1st July.
The Materials Science & Engineering Building (MSE Building) has been designed for Australia’s highest ranked materials and physical science research institute, and to further consolidate UNSW’s reputation as amongst the world’s top 50 universities.
The Jury cited, "The success of this project comes from its instrumentality at two scales. As a piece of urban machinery in the functioning of the campus master plan and as part of the consolidation of the new science precinct..."
Grimshaw was selected as Head Design Consultant, in collaboration with HDR Inc with TTW and Steensen Varming as the principal consultants, based on their competition-winning proposition which configures the precise functional and servicing requirements of physical and chemical science laboratories with the opportunities of enhanced interaction amongst researchers, academics and faculty members.
Completed in 2015, the MSE Building presents a new typology in laboratory spatial planning to best serve excellence and innovation in materials and physical science research.
